With economic troubles and without school nutrition programs, many DC area children and families are at risk of hunger this summer. They need your help. I'm John Berry, the director of the Office of Personnel Management. Together with your agency and the Chief Human Capital Officers Council, we've set a goal of gathering one million pounds of food for those in need. Look for bins near you.

It is with great pleasure that I lead the government-wide Feds Feed Families Warm Up to Giving Food Drive on behalf of the Chief Human Capital Council (CHCO). While our goal of collecting 1 million pounds of food may seem immeasurable, I am confident we will meet or exceed this ambitious goal.

Our federal family is fortunate in so many ways by having a job and good benefits. Some of our colleagues, however, may be facing challenges during this economic crisis. I read a recent article in the Washington Post that said during the summer, a growing number of after school programs take on a crucial, but unfamiliar role as emergency food providers for low income children. The article further reported that some organizations are finding themselves to be the last line of defense against children going hungry at night. I do not know about you, but when I think of a hungry child, I find this heart breaking.

While strictly voluntary, I encourage everyone, whose means allow, to donate five pounds of food items over the next several months. Pick-up dates are the last Friday in June, July, and August. As we Warm Up To Giving during these hot, sultry months ahead, the CHCO Council and I know that, together, we can all make a difference in someone's life!
